If anyone told you that Halloween was just for kids, they were definitely lying to you. This is the one time of the year you can walk around like you survived the worst mauling of your life and still be accepted by society. Halloween is a time where all the freaks come out to play and what better way to do that than to use bloody FX makeup! Throw in an especially gruesome costume to go with it, and you'll definitely be the center of the party!

Don't be shy. It's time to dig into your closet and dig out your fake blood, liquid latex,  and scar wax because it's time to put your creativity to use to create some amazing FX makeup for Halloween night. You're truly only limited by your creativity when it comes to possible makeup designs.

What you'll need to get started

Don't worry, you don't have to break the bank to transform yourself into a truly spooky horror of the night. In fact, you just need your basic DIY household items to make this happen. Here are just a few affordable items you can use to make your FX makeup ideas become a reality:

  • Glue stick
  • Food coloring
  • Cotton
  • Makeup kit
  • Scissors

As you can see, you don't exactly need expensive effects makeup when you can settle with cheaper options that work just as well (if you know what you're doing). Now, if you're ready to transform yourself into a creepy creature of the night let's take at a few ideas to get you started.

1) Bloody flowers

Think it would be cool to have flowers growing out of a gaping wound on the side of your face? Then this is the right choice for you. This is going to take a bit more skill than some of the other options on this list, but as long as you pay attention, you should be just fine. Here's what you'll need to pull this look off:

  • Spirit gum
  • Fake flowers
  • Liquid Latex
  • Fake blood

You can find all of these items for pretty cheap. You likely won't spend more than $20 (not including tax) if you shop in the right places.

Now, you have a choice of how big or small of a surface area you want this design to cover. For example, you can simply cover a small part of your mouth with the design, or you can have it covering the entire side of your face. It's your choice!

To pull this look off use the scar wax and place it appropriately on your face. Now place the fake flowers in the scar wax and use the liquid latex to help cement them in place. Work your artistic magic with your fake blood, and you'll soon look like you have a bloody scar on the side of your face spouting flowers! You could say it'll be a disturbing, yet beautiful sight to behold.

2) Aging

For younger people, aging may seem like a nightmare. Accelerate the aging process this Halloween by using the right type of makeup. There are a variety of ways you can go about doing this. You can blend together creme makeup over certain parts of your skin to give it an aged, sunken appearance. You will also need some wrinkles -- liquid latex will take care of that for you.

Of course, you'll need to change your hair to white or grey. Hair dye is a good option, but a quality wig will do just fine. Think of other effects you can go for such as warts, moles, age spots, a big wrinkly nose and more.

3) Melting face

Want to look like half your face is slowly oozing away into a disgusting puddle on the floor? Try this idea on for size! Let me tell you, by the time you're finished with this one you'll look like a wax doll who's been left out in the sun for too long. First off, this look works best with standard makeup (eyeshadow, lipstick, eyeliner, etc.). Then you'll want to use something that'll ooze a bit before drying. Scar effects gel does this wonderfully well and is highly recommended.

For the ladies trying this out, it's recommended that you make your makeup as bold as possible. That means bright lipstick, dark eyebrows, and dark eyelashes. That way when you apply the scar effects gel, you can add a really cool effect of your makeup oozing away along with the rest of your face!

4) Scars and cuts

Going for the carved up look? You'll want to invest in some scar wax. One really cool idea is to smooth some scar wax over a smooth area on your body, such as your hand. Then use a sponge to give it a more lifelike appearance. Then you can carve an image or perhaps a bloody message into the scar wax. The end result will look like someone decided to use your body as their personal art canvas.

One cool way to make the skin look irritated and puffy is to use blush. Simply dab all around the wound, and it'll look red and irritated. A word of warning -- if you apply the scar wax correctly it can look incredibly real. Make sure you don't forget that you have a bloody message carved into your arm before running off to the grocery store. You might alarm a few people.

5) Cosmetic surgery from hell

Imagine if a surgeon had begun to slice open your face for cosmetic surgery, but stopped about a quarter of the way through. You'd be a bloody mess! You don't really need much for this design. You'll simply require a black marker (make sure it's not a permanent marker) and some fake blood (or some food dye, whatever you have on hand at the time).

Use the black marker to draw cosmetic surgery lines around your face. Don't worry, you'll need zero years of art school to make this look great. You'll just be drawing some "cut here" lines. You know, for when the doctor carves you up to make you look more beautiful. As a side note, make sure you use a good enough marker to withstand sweat, rain, and water in general.

Now it's time for everyone's favorite part -- the blood! You can buy special FX blood, or you can easily whip some blood up with food dye, flour, and water. Trust me, a simple Google search will bring up dozens of fake blood recipes. Now apply blood along the lines you've drawn around your face. The end result should make you look like you've walked right off the doctor's table before he's had a chance to stitch up your face!

Be safe when applying FX makeup!

These are just a few cool FX makeup ideas for this upcoming Halloween. Just remember to be safe while you're applying certain types of material to your skin. Spirit gum and liquid latex require special attention to detail to ensure you're as safe as possible. Also be very careful if you're using something sharp to sculpt your makeup.

This list is by no means all-inclusive, but it should give you a pretty good idea of the type of FX makeup designs you can use this Halloween. No matter what design you decide to use remember to have fun and to be safe!
